MAELSTROM

A maelstrom (or malström) is a very powerful whirlpool; a large, swirling body of water. The word was introduced from the Nordic form by Edgar Allan Poe in his story A Descent into the Maelstrom (1841). Actually, the Nordic word is borrowed from the Dutch maalstroom which means grinding stream. The original Maelstrom (described by Poe and others) is the Moskstraumen, a powerful tidal current in the Lofoten Islands off the Norwegian coast.

Der Moskenstraumen, auch Mahlstrom oder Malstrom, ist ein Gezeitenstrom zwischen den Lofoten-Inseln Moskenesøy und Værøy in Norwegen.Charakteristisch für den Strom sind starke Wasserwirbel. Er wurde damit zum Namensgeber für fiktive gefährliche Wasserwirbel in Legenden, Literatur und Film, die oft übertrieben groß dargestellt werden.

Il maelstrom (in norvegese moskstraumen, "corrente di Mosken") è un fenomeno causato dalla marea lungo la costa atlantica della Norvegia, nei pressi delle isole Lofoten.Due volte al giorno il flusso di marea scorre avanti e indietro nello stretto tra Lofotodden e Værøy: a causa della conformazione dello stretto, angusto e poco profondo, si genera una corrente molto forte, con onde e vortici che rendono pericolosa la navigazione specie con navi di piccole dimensioni. Il fenomeno prende il nome dall'isolotto di Mosken, situato in mezzo allo stretto.
