A Métis is a person born to parents who belong to different groups defined by visible physical differences, regarded as racial. The term is of French origin, and also is a cognate of mestizo in Spanish. In the Western Hemisphere, this term usually is used to describe someone born or descended from the union of a European and an Amerindian. However, the term has been used by other groups around the world, mostly in countries which were under French influence such as Vietnam and is still commonly used by Francophones today.

Définition du métissage Origine du mot métis La notion de métis (du mot latin *mixticius, < mixtus qui signifie mélangé/mêlé) désigne le mélange de deux éléments distincts. À partir du , il désigne le croisement de deux espèces animales ou végétales différentes (un mestis). En 1615 le mot « métice », emprunté au portugais, désigne alors une personne née de parents appartenant à des populations présentant des différences phénotypiques importantes (comme la pigmentation de la peau). Ce terme fut notamment utilisé pour désigner les nombreux descendants de parents européens et « indigènes » issus de la colonisation. Enfin, on parle de métis pour des tissus (ex. toile métisse), des métaux (ex. fer métis), des mots, etc. issus du mélange de deux éléments distincts.

Die Métis (fr. Mestizen) sind eine Ethnie in Kanada.Die Métis sind Nachfahren europäischer Pelzhändler – insbesondere aus Frankreich, England und Schottland – und Frauen indianischer Abstammung, insbesondere der Ethnien der Cree, Anishinabe und Saulteaux.Die Entwicklung der Métis fand sukzessive im Zeitraum zwischen dem 17. Jahrhundert und dem späteren 19. Jahrhundert statt. Seit 1982 sind die Métis als indigenes Volk in Kanada anerkannt. Sie sprechen Französisch und Michif, eine Art Kreolsprache. Diese geht aber offenbar nicht auf ein Pidgin zurück, sondern hat sich aus Cree und Französisch entwickelt – das Nominalsystem ist französisch, das Verbalsystem ist Cree.
