A fairy tale or fairy story is a fictional story that usually features folkloric characters (such as fairies, goblins, elves, trolls, witches, giants, and talking animals) and enchantments, often involving a far-fetched sequence of events. In modern-day parlance, the term is also used to describe to something blessed with unusual happiness, as in "fairy tale ending" (a happy ending) or "fairy tale romance", though there are notable examples and genres of fairy tales that do not end happily. Colloquially, a "fairy tale" or "fairy story" can also mean any far-fetched story.

Le conte est un récit de faits ou d'aventures imaginaires. Pour les études littéraires, il fait donc partie des genres narratifs. A l'origine, un conte est raconté à l'oral. Depuis la Renaissance il a néanmoins fait l'objet de réécritures, devenant au fil des siècles un genre écrit à part entière. On peut ainsi distinguer deux pratiques du genre littéraire du conte : orale et écrite. Ces deux pratiques diffèrent dans leur fonctionnement (modes de création, de diffusion...) comme dans leur contenu, ce qui amène à les considérer de manière séparée.

Märchen (mittelhochdeutsch Maere = „Kunde, Bericht, Nachricht“) gehören zur Literaturgattung der Epik. Es handelt sich um kürzere Erzählungen, die von fabelhaften und wunderbaren Begebenheiten berichten, die allesamt frei erfunden sind und keinerlei wirkliche Begebenheiten als Grundlage haben. Sie finden sich zu allen Zeiten und bei allen Völkern dieser Welt. In Deutschland prägten insbesondere die Brüder Grimm den Begriff.

Baśń - jeden z podstawowych gatunków epickich, zazwyczaj niewielkich rozmiarów, odwołujący się zwykle do folkloru (folklor). Dominują w niej elementy fantastyki; opowiada o siłach nadprzyrodzonych, cudownych zdarzeniach, nadnaturalnych postaciach, zjawiskach etc. jedną z ważniejszych cech baśni, jest nieokreślony czas akcji. Zawiera ludową mądrość, przedstawia wierzenia ludowe i magiczne; baśń może być osnuta na podaniach, legendach.

La fiaba è un tipo di narrativa originaria della tradizione popolare, caratterizzata da componimenti brevi e centrati su avvenimenti e personaggi fantastici come fate, orchi, giganti e così via. Si distinguono dalle favole, in cui la componente fantastica è generalmente assente, e la narrazione ha un intento allegorico e morale più esplicito. Le fiabe sono tradizionalmente pensate per intrattenere i bambini.
