Luxor

Luxor (Arabic: الأقصر ) is a city in Upper (southern) Egypt and the capital of Luxor Governorate. Its population numbers 376,022 (1999 survey), and its area is about 416 km² . As the site of the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes, Luxor has frequently been characterised as the "world's greatest open air museum", the ruins of the temple complexes at Karnak and Luxor standing within the modern city. Immediately opposite, across the Nile River, lie the monuments, temples and tombs on the West Bank Necropolis, which include the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens. Thousands of international tourists arrive each year to visit these monuments, their presence forming a large part of the economic basis for the modern city. As a result, Luxor represents an excellent base for touring Upper Egypt, and is a popular holiday destination, both in its own right and as a starting or finishing point for Nile cruises.

Louxor (arabe : الأقصر , Al Uqsur) est une ville située sur la rive droite du Nil, en Haute-Égypte, située à environ 700 km au sud du Caire et à environ 300 km au nord d'Assouan. Selon le recensement de 2006, c'est à présent une ville de habitants —qui tous, vivent directement ou indirectement du tourisme—, ce qui la place au neuvième rang des villes égyptiennes.

Luxor ( al-Uqsur, die Stadt der Paläste, vielleicht von al-qusur, die Burgen, oder al-qasr, die Kaserne, die ins Deutsche übernommene Arabisierung des lateinischen castrum) ist eine Stadt in  Ägypten. Luxor (in arabo لأقصر) è una città dell'Egitto, capoluogo del governatorato omonimo. Si trova, a sud del Cairo e a nord di Assuan, nella Valle del Nilo, in Alto Egitto, sulla riva destra del fiume.Luxor è situata dove sorgeva l'antica città di Tebe, antica capitale dell' Egitto al tempo del Medio Regno.È un centro molto importante dal punto di vista archeologico sia perché nella città ci sono i templi di Luxor e Karnak, sia perché nelle vicinanze ci sono i siti archeologici della Valle dei Re e della Valle delle Regine.
