Luminiferous aether

This article is about the "aether" (also "ether") as a hypothesis in physics. For other uses, see Aether. In the late 19th century, luminiferous aether (or ether), meaning light-bearing aether, was the term used to describe a medium for the propagation of light. The word aether stems via Latin from the Greek αἰθήρ, from a root meaning to kindle, burn, or shine. It signified the substance thought in ancient times to fill the upper regions of space, beyond the clouds.

Der Äther (griech. αιθηρ [aithär] für der (blaue) Himmel) ist eine Substanz, die im ausgehenden 17. Jahrhundert als Medium für die Ausbreitung von Licht postuliert wurde. Später wurde das Konzept aus der Optik auch auf die Elektrodynamik und Gravitation übertragen, vor allem um auf Fernwirkung basierende Annahmen zu vermeiden. Das Wort stammt aus dem arabischen" أَثِيرٌ". Seit der allgemeinen Akzeptanz der speziellen Relativitätstheorie Albert Einsteins (1879–1955) und der  Quantenmechanik wird der Äther nicht mehr als physikalisches Konzept benötigt.

Eter [gr. αιτηρ - górne warstwy powietrza - hipotetyczna substancja wypełniająca całą przestrzeń. Koncepcja ta powróciła do nauki pod koniec XIX wieku wraz z rozwojem elektromagnetyzmu.
