A statistical analysis most frequently models the relationship between a dichotomous (binary) outcome variable (such as diseased or healthy; dead or alive; relapsed or not relapsed), and a set of explanatory variables of any kind (such as age, HLA type, kind of treatment, disease stage etc). It can also be used when the outcome variable is polytomous (several categories of the prognosis), and when there are several outcome variables.
