Northumbria, a kingdom of Angles in northern England, was initially divided into two kingdoms, Bernicia and Deira. The two were first united by Aethelfrith around the year 604, and except for occasional periods of division over the subsequent century, they remained so.

Das angelsächsische Königreich Northumbria entstand im 7. Der erste Herrscher, der beide Königreiche regiert hat, war Æthelfrith, doch kam es unter seinen Nachfolgern zum Teil wieder zur Trennung beider Reiche bzw. zur Errichtung eines Unterkönigreiches in Deira unter northumbrischer Oberhoheit.
