Library and information science (LIS) (sometimes in plural: library and information sciences) is a merging of the two fields library science and information science. The phrase "library and information science" is associated with schools of library and information science (abbreviated to "SLIS"), which generally developed from professional training programs (not academic disciplines) to university institutions during the second half of the twentieth century. In the last part of 1960s schools of librarianship began to add the term "information science" to their names. The first school to do this was at the University of Pittsburgh in 1964. More schools followed during the 1970s and 1980s and during the 1990s almost all library schools in the USA had added information science to their names. The trend was more for the adoption of information technology rather than the concept of a science. In other words, schools were using Information Technologies as a given practice, rather than using concepts of a science.

Die verwandten Bereiche der Bibliotheks-, Informations- und Dokumentationswissenschaft (BID) beschäftigen sich alle im weitesten Sinne mit Information und Wissen. Während es in der Dokumentationswissenschaft vor allem um die Sammlung Verarbeitung von Informationen zu deren Auffindbarmachung geht und sich die Bibliothekswissenschaft in diesem Zusammenhang mit der Rolle von Bibliotheken beschäftigt, behandelt die Informationswissenschaft auch gezielt umfassende und theoretische Aspekte. Während sich unter anderem im englischsprachigen Ausland die eher als zusammenhängendes Sachgebiet versteht, ist in Deutschland noch immer eine Trennung in diese drei Bereiche festzustellen. Gleichzeitig stammen viele Entwicklungen aus der Informatik, von der einige Teilgebiete (z. B. Knowledge Management) auch in den BID-Bereich fallen.

Biblioteks- och informationsvetenskap (B&I) är ett tvärvetenskapligt akademiskt ämne som handlar om olika aspekter av informationshantering. Detta inkluderar bland annat hur individer och grupper söker och använder information, tekniker och möjligheter till lagring och spridning av information samt kunskapsorganisation. Disciplinen kan räknas till samhällsvetenskap eller humaniora, men har även kopplingar till data- och systemvetenskapen.

Bibliotekoznawstwo, nauka o bibliotekarstwie - katalogowaniu książek i czasopism, organizacji oraz zarządzaniu biblioteką. Bibliotekoznawstwo jest osobną dziedziną naukową w grupie nauk humanistycznych i wraz z bibliografią dało podstawy współczesnemu księgoznawstwu.
