Liberia

Liberia, officially the Republic of Liberia, is a country on the west coast of Africa, bordered by Sierra Leone, Guinea, Côte d'Ivoire, and the Atlantic Ocean. Liberia has a hot equatorial climate with most rainfall arriving in summer with harsh harmattan winds in the dry season. Liberia's populated Pepper Coast is comprised of mostly mangrove swamps while the sparse inland is forested, later opening to a plateau of drier grasslands. Since 1989, Liberia has been in a state of flux witnessing two civil wars, the First Liberian Civil War (1989–1996), and the Second Liberian Civil War (1999–2003), displacing hundreds of thousands of people and decimating the country's economy.

Le Libéria ou Liberia avec l'orthographe anglaise, est un pays d'Afrique de l'Ouest bordé au sud par l'océan Atlantique, au nord-ouest par la Sierra Leone, au nord par la Guinée et à l’est par la Côte d’Ivoire. Die Republik Liberia (dt.: [], manchmal auch Liberien; engl.: []) ist ein Staat in Westafrika und grenzt an die Elfenbeinküste, Guinea, Sierra Leone sowie an den Atlantik. Liberia war zunächst ein Projekt zur Ansiedlung ehemaliger afroamerikanischer Sklaven aus den Vereinigten Staaten und einer der ersten unabhängigen Staaten auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent (siehe American Colonization Society). Konflikte zwischen ehemaligen afroamerikanischen Sklaven und den einheimischen Ethnien prägen das Land bis heute. Nach mehr als zehn Jahren Bürgerkrieg wurde mit der demokratischen Wahl einer neuen Staatspräsidentin im November 2005 (Stichwahl) der Grundstein für einen demokratischen Neuanfang Liberias gelegt.
