Leyte

Leyte is a province of the Philippines located in the Eastern Visayas region. Its capital is Tacloban City and occupies the northern three-quarters of the island of Leyte. Leyte is located west of Samar province, north of Southern Leyte and south of Biliran. To the west of Leyte across the Camotes Sea is the province of Cebu.

Leyte (ausgesprochen:leɪte) ist eine Insel der Philippinen und gehört zu der Visaya-Gruppe. Leyte wurde weltweit durch die See- und Luftschlacht im Golf von Leyte im Zweiten Weltkrieg bekannt, die nach Meinung der meisten Historiker die größte Seeschlacht der bekannten Geschichte war.

Leyte, filipińska wyspa w środkowej części kraju. Położona między wyspami: Bohol i Cebu (na zachodzie), Samar (północny wschód) i Mindanao (na południu). Górzysta, liczne wygasłe wulkany. Najwyższy szczyt 1350 m n.p.m.Panuje tu klimat równikowy, wilgotny. Zachowało się niewiele naturalnych obszarów leśnych. Podstawą gospodarki jest rolnictwo. Uprawia się trzcinę cukrową, banany, tytoń szlachetny, ryż i kukurydzę. Występują złoża manganu. Głównymi miastami są: Tacloban i Ormoc. Leyte jest połączona mostem z wyspą Samar.
