Leviathan or The Matter, Forme and Power of a Common Wealth Ecclesiasticall and Civil — commonly called simply Leviathan — is a book written by Thomas Hobbes (1588–1679) and published in 1651. Its name derives from the biblical Leviathan. The work concerns the structure of society and legitimate government, and is regarded as one of the earliest and most influential examples of social contract theory. The publisher was Andrew Crooke, partner in Andrew Crooke and William Cooke. Leviathan ranks high as a classical western work on statecraft comparable to Machiavelli's The Prince and is one of a number of related works incident upon the crisis of the English state framework of the time.

Leviathan or the Matter, Forme and Power of a Commonwealth Ecclesiastical and Civil (Leviathan oder Stoff, Form und Gewalt eines kirchlichen und bürgerlichen Staates) ist der Titel einer staatstheoretischen Schrift von Thomas Hobbes aus dem Jahr 1651 und eines der bedeutendsten Werke der politischen Philosophie überhaupt. Der Titel lehnt sich an das biblisch-mythologische Seeungeheuer Leviathan an, vor dessen Allmacht jeglicher menschliche Widerstand zuschanden werden muss. Eine ähnliche Rolle kommt in Hobbes' absolutistischem Politikverständnis dem Staat zu, der damit zum Gegenstück des durch das Ungeheuer Behemoth personifizierten Naturzustandes wird.

Le Léviathan, ou Traité de la matière, de la forme et du pouvoir d'une république ecclésiastique et civile, est une œuvre écrite par Thomas Hobbes, publiée en 1651, qui constitue probablement le livre de philosophie politique le plus célèbre. Il tire son titre du Leviathan biblique. W swej najistotniejszej części traktuje o tym, iż jedynym sposobem uniknięcia zła (które spotyka ludzi żyjących w stanie natury) i powstrzymania żądzy władzy (którą postrzega jako wpisaną trwale w ludzki charakter) jest zawarcie umowy przekazującej nieograniczoną, absolutną władzę w ręce suwerena, wiążąc ją z formą rządów, którą nazywa absolutyzmem.

Il Leviatano è probabilmente il libro più conosciuto di Thomas Hobbes, pubblicato nel 1651. Il titolo è ripreso dalla figura biblica del Leviatano. Il libro tratta il problema della legittimità e della forma dello Stato, rappresentato sulla copertina della prima edizione del testo come un gigante costituito da tanti singoli individui; il gigante regge in una mano una spada, simbolo del potere temporale, e nell'altra il simbolo del potere religioso, a indicare che, secondo Hobbes, i due poteri non vanno separati.
