Lesbos

Lesbos (Modern Greek: Lesvos (Λέσβος)), is a Greek island located in the northeastern Aegean Sea. Lesbos is part of the Lesbos Prefecture, the third largest Greek island and the eighth largest in the Mediterranean Sea. It has an area of 1,630 km² (630 square miles) with 320 kilometres (almost 200 miles) of coastline. Its population is approximately 90,000, a third of which lives in its capital, Mytilene, in the southeastern part of the island. The remaining population is distributed in small towns and villages. The largest towns are Kalloni, Gera Villages, Plomari, Agiasos, Eresos and Molyvos, the ancient Mythymna. Mytilene was founded in the 11th century BC by the family Penthilidae, who arrived from Thessaly, and ruled until the popular revolt (590–580 BC) led by Pittacus of Mytilene.

Lesbos (en grec ancien  Lésbos, en grec moderne  Lésvos), souvent aussi appelée du nom de sa capitale Mytilène, est la plus grande des îles grecques au large des côtes d'Asie Mineure. Lesbos ( , in heutiger Aussprache „Lesvos“) ist eine griechische Insel in der Nordost-Ägäis nahe der türkischen Küste und Teil der gleichnamigen Präfektur. Die Bewohner der Insel werden an das Neugriechische angelehnt auf deutsch als Lesvioten oder Lesvier, nicht als Lesbier bezeichnet. In der Landessprache werden sowohl die Insel als auch deren Bewohner meist nach der Inselhauptstadt Mytilini (Μυτιλήνη) bzw. Mytilinios (Μυτιλήνιος) genannt.

Lesbos (gr. Λέσβος) - jedna z największych wysp na Morzu Egejskim. Należy do Grecji i wchodzi w skład prefektury Lesbos w regionie administracyjnym Wyspy Egejskie Północne. Wyspa położona jest w Azji (na azjatyckim szelfie kontynentalnym) u wybrzeży Turcji, od Azji Mniejszej oddzielają ją cieśniny Muslim na północy i Lesbijska na wschodzie. W południowo-zachodnie wybrzeże wcina się zatoka Kalonis. Stolicą i największym miastem wyspy i prefektury Lesbos jest Mitylena. W starożytności mieszkała tam Safona.
