7 października 1571 roku koło Lepanto rozegrała się bitwa morska pomiędzy Turcją a Ligą Świętą, zakończona zwycięstwem chrześcijan. Bój pod Lepanto jest najkrwawszą bitwą morską w dziejach świata .

W 1570 r. Turcja zażądała od Wenecji przekazania Cypru. Wenecjanie zignorowali groźbę turecką. Cypr został najechany przez wojska tureckie. Pius V, papież, zorganizował (maj 1571) wśród państw chrześcijańskich Świętą Ligę, w której główne role odgrywały Hiszpania i Wenecja.
