Leopold von Sacher-Masoch

Leopold Ritter von Sacher-Masoch (27 January, 1836 — 9 March, 1895) was an Austrian writer and journalist, who gained renown at his time for his stories of Galician life and romantic novels. The term masochism is derived from his name.During his life, Sacher-Masoch was well-known as a man of letters, who was seen by some as a potential successor to Goethe and was often compared to Turgenev. He was a utopian thinker who espoused socialist and humanist ideals in his fiction and non-fiction. Most of his works remain untranslated in English; the novel Venus in Furs is his only book commonly available in English.

Charlotte Arand i Zoe von Rodenbach (ur. 27 stycznia 1836 we Lwowie, zm. 9 marca 1895 w Lindheim, obecnie dzielnicy Altenstadt, niedaleko Frankfurtu nad Menem w Hesji w Niemczech) - pisarz, nowelista i dramaturg  austriacki, epoki romantyzmu. Prekursor modernizmu, porównywany nieraz do Iwana Turgieniewa. Od jego nazwiska pochodzi termin na określenie zaburzenia seksualnego - masochizm.

Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, scrittore austriaco, nacque a Leopoli nel 1836. Laureato in giurisprudenza, fu giornalista e narratore, autore di romanzi realistici di ambiente galiziano ed ebraico (L'ultimo re dei Magiari, 1867; Racconti galiziani, 1876; Storie di ebrei polacchi, 1886). Deve la sua fama ai romanzi erotici (Venere in pelliccia, 1870; Le messaline di Vienna, 1874; Falso ermellino, 1873-1879; Donne crudeli, 1907 postumo) nei quali viene descritto quell' orientamento sessuale che gli fu tipico, e che Krafft-Ebing chiamò successivamente masochismo.
