Lenape

The Lenape or Lenni-Lenape (later named Delaware Indians by Europeans) were, in the 1600s, loosely organized bands of Native American peoples with shared cultural and linguistic characteristics.They practiced small-scale agriculture to augment a largely mobile hunter-gatherer society in the region around the Delaware River, the lower Hudson River, and western Long Island Sound. The Lenape were the people living in New Jersey, the vicinity of New York Harbor, and in the Delaware Valley at the time of the arrival of the Europeans in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and continue to live in this area today. Their Algonquian language is known as either Lenape or "Delaware".

Mit Lenni Lenape, Lenape oder Delaware wird ein Indianerstamm bezeichnet, der zu Beginn des 17. Jahrhunderts das Tal des Delaware Rivers und die angrenzende Gebieten im Nordosten der heutigen USA bewohnte. Die Lenni Lenape sprachen Dialekte von drei eng verwandten östlichen Algonkin-Sprachen, nämlich Munsee, Unalachtigo und Unami. Unter dem Druck der weißen Besiedlung mussten sie nicht weniger als zwanzig Mal umziehen. Auf ihrem Weg nach Westen lebten sie ständig an der Siedlungsgrenze, der Frontier, und waren damit im Zentrum des Geschehens: Den Kriegen zwischen den Kolonialmächten England und Frankreich und später zwischen den Amerikanern und Indianern, die ungezählte Opfer auf beiden Seiten forderten. Im Jahr 2005 lebten etwa 13.500 Nachkommen der Lenni Lenape verstreut über sieben Staaten der USA und einer Provinz in Kanada.

I Lenape o Lenni-Lenape (chiamati Delaware dagli europei) erano un popolo nativo americano che, allorché i primi coloni bianchi europei misero piede sulla costa atlantica del continente nord-americano, costituiva una confederazione tribale insediata nell'attuale Stato della Pennsylvania  Fu dunque uno dei primi gruppi a intrattenere relazioni con i nuovi arrivati d'oltreoceano. Il gruppo dei Lenape, o Delaware, era chiamato "nonno" per la sua capacità di risolvere le dispute intertribali e, malgrado l'ostilità per gli invasori bianchi, preferì la via dell'accordo con essi allo scontro, a causa dell'evidente superiorità tecnologica mostrata da quelli.
