Lemnos

Lemnos (, Limnos) is an island in the northern part of the Aegean Sea. It is part of the Greek prefecture of Lesbos and has a considerable area, about 476 km² (150 sq.mi). A great part is mountainous, but some very fertile valleys exist. The chief towns are Myrina, on the western coast, and Moudros on the eastern shore of a large bay in the middle of the island. Myrina (aka Kastro) possesses an excellent harbour, and is the seat of all the trade carried on with the island. The hillsides afford pasture for sheep. A few mulberry and fruit trees grow, but no olives. Muscat grapes are grown widely, and are used to produce an unusual table wine that is dry yet has a strong Muscat flavor.

Lemnos ou Límnos (en grec ancien , en grec moderne) est une île grecque du nord-est de la mer Egée, située entre la péninsule du mont Athos à l'ouest, les îles de Thasos et Samothrace au nord, la Turquie (et l'île turque de Gökçeada) à l'est, Lesbos au sud-est, Agios Efstrátios et les Sporades au sud-ouest. Elle est rattachée au nome de Lesbos.

Lemnos (gr. Λήμνος) to górzysta wyspa, należąca do Grecji, położona na Morzu Egejskim, administracyjnie jest częścią nomosu  Lesbos, powierzchnia 476 km², 4 027 mieszkańców. Główne gałęzie gospodarki to turystyka, uprawa winorośli, owoców i warzyw. Na wyspie istnieje ważna grecka baza wojskowa.Na Lemnos odnaleziono stelę kamienną z VI wieku p.n.e. z napisem w starożytnym języku pierwotnych mieszkańców wyspy, przypuszczalnie spokrewnionym z językiem etruskim.Wyspa wspomniana w mitologii greckiej jako rezydencja boga Hefajstosa (tam upadł, wyrzucony z Olimpu przez Zeusa za wmieszanie się do jego sprzeczki z Herą). Kolejny raz wspomniana jako miejsce postoju Argonautów w czasie wyprawy po złote runo; tam zastali społeczeństwo samych kobiet (wymordowały z zemsty za zdradę wszystkich mężczyzn). Z ich związków z tymi kobietami pochodzić mieli Minojczycy.

Lemno (In greco: Λήμνος) è un'isola nella parte settentrionale del Mar Egeo. Ha un'estensione di 476 km2, 17.000 abitanti. È in gran parte collinosa con qualche fertile valletta. Il centro più importante è Myrina sulla costa occidentale con un ottimo porto naturale. Un centro di minore importanza è Mudro. L'isola è un'importante base militare a causa della sua posizione poco lontana dagli stretti del mar di Marmara.
