Despite being an acronym, LEIM is often written in lowercase in various documentation Leim is an acronym for the Library of Emacs Input Methods.This library is not an integral part of the Emacs system, and it is provided in the corresponding leim package.Development of this module has been funded by the Japanese government, which retains the copyright on it. Since this library is essential for effective writing in many languages other than English, the Free Software Foundation made an exception to its legal policy, which requires an in-write copyright assignment for every piece of software that is to be included in the GNU project.

Nach DIN 16921 ist ein Leim die wässrige Lösung eines Klebstoffs. Dadurch wurde der ursprüngliche Begriff von Leim als Klebstoff auf Basis tierischer Eiweiße (Hautleim, Knochenleim, Lederleim, Hausenblasenleim, Hasenleim) auch auf pflanzliche (Kleister) und synthetische Klebstoffe erweitert.Ihrem Verwendungszweck entsprechend werden sie weiter in Holzleim, Papierleim, Tapetenkleister usw. unterteilt.Allgemein: Leim: Als Leime werden meist alle Klebstoffe auf der Basis organischer Stoffe bezeichnet, dazu zählen die aus Häuten und Knochen gewonnenen Glutinleime (Knochenleim, Hautleim) und die aus Milcheiweiß hergestellten Kaseinleime (z. B. Quarkleim).
