Lehmann has proved an able and solid goalkeeper on the infrequent occasions when called on to deputise for Kahn. Familiar with European glory after triumphing in the UEFA Cup with FC Schalke 04 in 1997, Lehmann had a brief spell at AC Milan, but he left the Rossoneri for Borussia Dortmund when he was unable to prise the number one shirt from the grasp of veteran ‘keeper Sebastiano Rossi. Since making his international debut in 1998 Lehmann has argued several times that he is a superior keeper to Kahn, but barring an injury to the FC Bayern München man, his unshakeable confidence seems unlikely to win him anything other than a summer on the substitute’s bench.
