Lean manufacturing, lean enterprise, or lean production, often simply, "Lean," is a production practice that considers the expenditure of resources for any goal other than the creation of value for the end customer to be wasteful, and thus a target for elimination. Working from the perspective of the customer who consumes a product or service, "value" is defined as any action or process that a customer would be willing to pay for.

Die englischen Begriffe und wurden als Schlanke Produktion im deutschen Sprachraum populär. Man versteht darunter ursprünglich die von Womack/Jones/Roos in deren so genannter MIT-Studie bei japanischen Automobilherstellern vorgefundene Produktionsorganisation, welche der in den USA und Europa zu der Zeit (1980er-Jahre) vorherrschenden, von ihnen so genannten gepufferten Produktion () entgegengesetzt wurde. Shah und Ward (2007) verstehen unabhängig von dieser auf die damalige japanische Situation bezogene Vorstellung schlanke Produktion allgemein als „integriertes soziotechnisches System, dessen Kernzielsetzung die Beseitigung von Verschwendung ist, indem gleichzeitig lieferantenseitige, kundenseitige und interne Schwankungen reduziert oder minimiert werden“.

L'école de gestion d'entreprise dite lean (littéralement : « maigre », « sans gras », « dégraissé ») s'intéresse à la performance (productivité, qualité). Les tenants du lean recherchent la performance par l'amélioration continue et l'élimination des gaspillages (muda en japonais, dont il existe sept catégories : productions excessives, attentes, transports et manutentions inutiles, tâches inutiles, stocks, mouvements inutiles et productions défectueuses). L'école de gestion lean trouve ses sources au Japon dans le Toyota Production System (TPS). Adaptable à tous les secteurs économiques, le lean est actuellement principalement implanté dans l'industrie (et principalement l'industrie automobile).

Lean Manufacturing-jest to określenie pewnego systemu zarządzania produkcją opartego na zasadzie możliwie największego uproszczenia procesu technologicznego produkcji i dobraniu takich narzędzi oraz wypracowaniu takich procedur,aby produkować wyrób możliwie najtaniej,ograniczając liczbę pracowników(balans linii) oraz nie dopuszczając do powstawania strat materiałów w procesie produkcji. Dzięki zastosowaniu nowych technologi produkcji,maszyn sterowanych numerycznie,urządzeń "poka-yoke" itp. można radykalnie obniżyć koszty produkcji jednostkowej,oraz ograniczyć zatrudnienie.

Lean management (ang.) - jedna z technik zarządzania przedsiębiorstwem, której celem jest tworzenie prostych i przejrzystych struktur w przedsiębiorstwie oraz nadanie większego znaczenia zasobom pracy, aby można je było wykorzystywać jak najlepiej. Jest to jedno z typowych przedsięwzięć restrukturyzacyjnych stosowanych w przedsiębiorstwach. Brak jest polskiego tłumaczenia tego zwrotu co powoduje, że w literaturze fachowej używa się zwrotu oryginalnego, który w dosłownym tłumaczeniu brzmiałby: ,,zarządzanie wyszczuplające". Geneza lean management jest związana z systemem produkcji zastosowanym w japońskiej firmie Toyota (tzw. Toyota Production System, TPS lub lean manufacturing). Za twórców lean management uważa się: Sakichi Toyoda, Kaiichiro Toyoda i Taiichi Ohno.
