Le Marche

The Marche (plural, originally from le marche de Ancona, referring to the March of Ancona) is one of the 20 Regions of Italy. It is located in the Central area of the country, bordering Emilia-Romagna and the republic of San Marino to the north, Tuscany to the north-west, Umbria to west, Abruzzo and Lazio to the south, and the Adriatic Sea to the east. Except for river valleys and the often very narrow coastal strip, the land is hilly. In the 19th century a railway from Bologna to Brindisi linked the Marche along the coast-line of the entire territory. Inland, the mountainous nature of the region, even today, allows little communication north and south, except by rough roads over the passes.

Marken (italienisch Marche) ist eine Region in Mittelitalien. Sie liegt zwischen Adria und Apennin. Im Norden grenzt Marken an die Emilia-Romagna, im Süden an die Abruzzen, westlich finden sich die Toskana, Umbrien und Lazio. Die Region hat eine Fläche von 9.694 km² und rund 1,52 Millionen Einwohner. Die Hauptstadt ist Ancona. Sie besteht aus den Provinzen Ancona, Ascoli Piceno, Fermo, Macerata und Pesaro-Urbino.

Marken war früher eine Insel in der Zuidersee. 1957 wurde die Insel durch einen Deich mit dem Festland verbunden. Heute liegt die Halbinsel in dem nach ihr benannten Markermeer und gehört zur Gemeinde Waterland in der Provinz Nordholland. Auf Marken lebten 2007 etwa 1.850 Menschen.

Zajmuje powierzchnię 9694 km², zamieszkuje go 1,4 miliona osób, a stolicą jest Ankona (104.000 mieszkańców). Gęstość zaludnienia - 147 osób na km². Jest to region wybitnie rolniczy, z przeważającymi w krajobrazie starannie utrzymanymi winnicami, gajami oliwnymi, polami, łąkami i pastwiskami. W przemyśle istotne gałęzie stanowi przemysł obuwniczy, papierniczy oraz wyrób instrumentów muzycznych.
