Lautverschiebung
Mit Lautverschiebung werden bestimmte systematische Lautwandel-Phänomene bezeichnet, welche im Laufe der Entwicklung einer Sprache auftreten können. Dabei wandeln sich nach gewissen Regeln Konsonanten und/oder Vokale regelhaft in andere um (zum Beispiel spiegelt die Alternanz von niederdeutsch und englisch water zu hochdeutsch Wasser, niederdeutsch eten oder eaten und englisch eat zu hochdeutsch essen die hochdeutsche Lautverschiebung wider).

\laut"ver*schie`bung\ (?), n.; pl. -schiebungen (&?;). [g.; laut sound + verschiebung shifting.] (philol.) (a) the regular changes which the primitive indo-european stops, or mute consonants, underwent in the teutonic languages, probably as early as the 3d century b. c., often called the first lautverschiebung, sound shifting , or consonant shifting. (b) a somewhat similar set of changes taking place in the high german dialects (less fully in modern literary german) from the 6th to the 8th century, known as the second lautverschiebung, the result of which form the striking differences between high german and the low german languages. the statement of these changes is commonly regarded as forming part of grimm's law, because included in it as originally framed. Hangeltolódás
Hangeltolódásnak vagy hangváltozásnak nevezzük azt a hangtani fejlődési jelenséget, amelynek során a beszélők bizonyos hangokat valamilyen megfigyelhető szabályszerűség alapján másképp kezdenek ejteni (pl. zöngétlen → zöngés, zárhang → réshang, stb). Bár speciálisan ezzel a névvel illetjük a germán nyelvek történetében végbement változásokat (Lautverschiebung), a hangeltolódás nem kizárólag a germán nyelvek sajátossága (hiszen az indoeurópai nyelvcsalád kisebb csoportjai is alapvetően fonetikai változások eredményeképpen jöttek létre). A hangeltolódás lassú folyamat, több évszázad alatt megy végbe. Okai általában különböző belső és külső tényezők együttes hatásaira vezethetőek vissza, azonban a legtöbb esetben nem lehet a konkrét hangváltozások eredetére egyértelműen bizonyítható magyarázatot találni.
