Latin literature

Latin literature, the body of written works in the Latin language, remains an enduring legacy of the culture of ancient Rome. The Romans produced many works of poetry, comedy, tragedy, satire, history, and rhetoric, drawing heavily on the traditions of other cultures and particularly on the more matured literary tradition of Greece. Long after the Western Roman Empire had fallen, the Latin language continued to play a central role in western European civilization.

Définir la littérature latine peut prêter à débat. Du point de vue chronologique, on a continué très longtemps à écrire en latin (voir, par exemple, certains poèmes des Fleurs du mal publiés en 1857), mais la plupart des histoires de la littérature latine ne portent que sur les textes rédigés sous la République et l'Empire romain.

Die Literatur der Römischen Republik und des Römischen Reiches wurde großteils in Latein verfasst (daneben spielte seit etwa 200 auch das Griechische eine bedeutende Rolle). Die Perioden der lateinischen Literatur werden traditionell aufgeteilt in die Goldene Latinität, die etwa die Periode vom Anfang des 1. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. bis zur Mitte des 1. Jahrhunderts n. Chr., und die Silberne Latinität, die die übrige klassische Periode umfasst. Nach dem Ende des 2. Jahrhunderts folgt die spätlateinische Literatur, bis zur Entwicklung in die Romanischen Sprachen.
