Laserdisc (LD) was the first commercial optical disc storage medium, and was used primarily for movies for home viewing.During its development, MCA, which owned the technology, referred to it as the Reflective Optical Videodisc System; changing the name once in 1969 to Disco-Vision and then again in 1978 to DiscoVision (without the hyphen), which became the official spelling. MCA owned the rights to the largest catalog of films in the world during this time, and they manufactured and distributed the Discovision releases of those films under the "MCA DiscoVision" label beginning on December 15 1978.

Le Laserdisc (aussi connu sous le nom de LD, Videodisc) ou Vidéodisque, est un support destiné à la vidéo. Ancêtre des CD et DVD actuels, il permettait une qualité supérieure au magnétoscope, mais son prix et son encombrement l'ont limité en diffusion. Il a été supplanté par l'apparition des DVD en 1998 et sa durée de vie aura été de quinze ans.

Die Laserdisc (LD), auch Laservisiondisc oder CD-Video genannt, ist ein CD-ähnliches Speichermedium für Videos im Heimgebrauch. Aufgrund ihrer hohen Qualität wurden LDs auch im professionellen Bereich eingesetzt. Die Abtastung erfolgt berührungslos durch einen Laser. Im Gegensatz zu Tonbändern, Schallplatten, Videobändern und anderen Bildplatten-Techniken gibt es daher –- theoretisch –- keine Abnutzung. Heute ist sie im Heimbereich, vor allem in Europa, von der DVD nahezu verdrängt.

Il Laserdisc, nato agli inizi degli anni Settanta del XX secolo, è il primo standard di videoregistrazione su disco ottico.Alla vista consiste in un disco di materiali plastici simili a quelli di un Compact Disc dal quale differisce nelle maggiori dimensioni paragonabili a quelle di un disco in vinile a 33 giri.Il Laserdisc, nonostante il sistema di lettura molto simile a quello dei compact disc possa far credere il contrario, contiene i dati video in formato analogico e non numerico (digitale) e più tracce audio in formato analogico e digitale. La qualità del formato è molto elevata, dal momento che il video viene modulato in frequenza e registrato così com'è, senza alcuna forma di compressione: questo permette una qualità del video composito identica a quella di un videoregistratore di classe broadcast.
