Laos

Laos (IPA: ), officially the Lao People's Democratic Republic, is a landlocked communist state in southeast Asia, bordered by Burma (Myanmar) and China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south, and Thailand to the west. Laos traces its history to the Kingdom of Lan Xang or Land of a Million Elephants, which existed from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century. After a period as a French protectorate, it gained independence in 1949. A long civil war ended when the communist Pathet Lao movement came to power in 1975.

Er grenzt an China, Vietnam, Kambodscha, Thailand und Myanmar und hat sechs Millionen Einwohner auf einer Fläche von 236.800 km²; Hauptstadt und größte Stadt ist Vientiane.

Die Laikós Orthódoxos Synagermós (, deutsch: „Orthodoxe Volkszusammenkunft“ oder „volkstümlich-orthodoxer Alarm“, kurz: oder LAOS, mit Betonung auf dem „o“) ist eine politische Partei in Griechenland. Die Partei ist Mitglied der europakritischen Fraktion Unabhängigkeit und Demokratie (IND/DEM) und verfügt über einen Abgeordneten im Europaparlament. Sie versteht sich als nationalkonservative Kraft, die SPD-nahe Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung bezeichnet sie aber als „extrem rechts“, die den Grünen nahe stehende Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung ordnet die LAOS als „nationalistisch und neo-rassistisch, eher systemkritisch“ ein.
