Laos (IPA: ), officially the Lao People's Democratic Republic, is a landlocked communist state in southeast Asia, bordered by Burma (Myanmar) and China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south, and Thailand to the west. Laos traces its history to the Kingdom of Lan Xang or Land of a Million Elephants, which existed from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century. After a period as a French protectorate, it gained independence in 1949. A long civil war ended when the communist Pathet Lao movement came to power in 1975.

Die Lao sind eine ethnische Gruppe Südostasiens. Der Großteil der Lao lebt am mittleren Mekong in Laos und Thailand. Die thailändischen Lao konzentrieren sich auf die Region Isaan, obwohl es sehr viele Arbeiter aus Isaan in den anderen Teilen Thailands gibt, z.B. in Bangkok. Die Lao sprechen verschiedene Dialekte des Lao und Isaan, die beide oft als eine einzige Sprache dargestellt werden. Viele Menschen in Isaan ziehen den Begriff "Isaan" für sich selbst vor, da im 20. Jahrhundert eine "Thaisierungskampagne" durchgeführt wurde. Trotzdem bestehen immer noch viele kulturelle Verbindungen zwischen den Lao insgesamt.

Die Laikós Orthódoxos Synagermós (, deutsch: „Orthodoxe Volkszusammenkunft“ oder „volkstümlich-orthodoxer Alarm“, kurz: oder LAOS, mit Betonung auf dem „o“) ist eine politische Partei in Griechenland. Die Partei ist Mitglied der europakritischen Fraktion Unabhängigkeit und Demokratie (IND/DEM) und verfügt über einen Abgeordneten im Europaparlament. Sie versteht sich als nationalkonservative Kraft, die SPD-nahe Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung bezeichnet sie aber als „extrem rechts“, die den Grünen nahe stehende Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung ordnet die LAOS als „nationalistisch und neo-rassistisch, eher systemkritisch“ ein.

Laos (laotisch: ປະເທດລາວ, amtlich: ສາທາລະນະລັດ ປະຊາທິປະໄຕ ປະຊາຊົນລາວ, transkribiert Sathalanalat Paxathipatai Paxaxon Lao, deutsch: Demokratische Volksrepublik Laos) ist der einzige Binnenstaat in Südostasien. Er grenzt an China, Vietnam, Kambodscha, Thailand und Myanmar und hat sechs Millionen Einwohner auf einer Fläche von 236.800 km²; Hauptstadt und größte Stadt ist Vientiane.

Stolica Wientian (180 tys. mieszkańców), główna rzeka Mekong. Na północy Laos graniczy z Birmą i Chinami, na wschodzie z Wietnamem, na południu z Kambodżą, a na zachodzie z Tajlandią.

Laotańczycy - naród azjatycki należący do tajskiej grupy językowej, która jest z kolei częścią rodziny chińsko-tybetańskiej   (język laotański). Laotańczycy zamieszkują przede wszystkim Tajlandię gdzie ich społeczność liczy 19 milionów osób. W Laosie jest ich ok. 5 mln. Ponadto można ich spotkać w USA (200 tys.), Kambodży (85 tys.) oraz we Francji (50 tys.). Całą populację Laotańczyków szacuje się na około 25 mln. Są oni głównie buddystami. W Tajlandii Lao mieszkają głównie w regionie Isan, choć wskutek migracji zarobkowej rozprzestrzenili się do innych rejonów, np. Bangkoku.
