Landshut is a city in Bavaria in the south-east of Germany, belonging to both Eastern and Southern Bavaria. Situated on the banks of the River Isar, Landshut is the capital of Lower Bavaria, one of the seven administrative regions of the Free State of Bavaria. It is also the seat of the surrounding district. With a population of more than 60,000, Landshut is the largest city in Lower Bavaria, followed by Passau and Straubing, as well as Eastern Bavaria's second biggest city after Regensburg.

Landshut ist eine kreisfreie Stadt, die sowohl zu Ost- als auch zu Südbayern gezählt wird. Sie ist Sitz der Regierung von Niederbayern und der gleichnamigen Gebietskörperschaft, des Bezirks Niederbayern. Des Weiteren ist die Stadt Verwaltungssitz des Landkreises Landshut. Mit gut 62.000 Einwohnern ist Landshut vor Passau und Straubing die größte Stadt des Regierungsbezirks sowie nach Regensburg die zweitgrößte Stadt Ostbayerns. Im bayernweiten Vergleich liegt sie auf Rang 12 (Stand: 31. Dezember 2005). Landshut ist nordöstliches Zentrum der im Mai 2007 geschaffenen Europäischen Metropolregion München.

Au 31 décembre 2005, c'est la douzième ville de Bavière.
