The Landsat program is the longest running enterprise for acquisition of satellite imagery of Earth. On July 26, 1972 the Earth Resources Technology Satellite was launched. This was eventually renamed to Landsat. The most recent, Landsat 7, was launched on April 15, 1999. The instruments on the Landsat satellites have acquired millions of images. The images, archived in the United States and at Landsat receiving stations around the world, are a unique resource for global change research and applications in agriculture, cartography, geology, forestry, regional planning, surveillance, education and national security. Landsat 7 data has eight spectral bands with spatial resolutions ranging from 15 to 60 meters; the temporal resolution is 16 days.

Die Landsat-Satelliten sind eine Serie von zivilen Erdbeobachtungssatelliten der NASA zur Fernerkundung der Erdoberfläche. Sie dienen hauptsächlich der Kartierung natürlicher Ressourcen. Seit 1972 sind sieben Satelliten (davon ein Fehlstart) dieser Serie gestartet worden, die sich auf drei Baureihen verteilen. Die Fernerkundungsplattform zeichnet mit verschieden Sensoren sogenannte Fernerkundungsdaten auf.

Le programme Landsat est un des plus anciens programmes d'observation de la surface terrestre des États-Unis. Un de ses premiers objectifs était l'évaluation des volumes de récolte céréalières en URSS et aux Etats-Unis afin d'anticiper l'évolution des cours, voire de les influencer si nécessaire.

Landsatprogrammet är det till dags dato längsta aktiva projektet för inhämtande av satellitbilder av Jorden. Hittills har sju satelliter skjutits upp, den första så tidigt som 1972 och den senaste 1999. Miljontals fotografier har tagits under årens lopp och används till bland annat forskning inom ekologi, jordbruk, geologi och skogsbruk.

Landsat - nazwa programu zdalnego pozyskiwania zdjęć Ziemi z kosmosu. Program (początkowo pod nazwą ERTS - Earth Resources Technology Satellite) prowadzony jest przez NASA i USGS. Jego celem było skonstruowanie serii specjalnych satelitów, wprowadzenie ich na orbitę (pierwszy z nich został wystrzelony 23 lipca 1972 r., a najnowszy 15 kwietnia 1999), następnie pozyskanie za pomocą aparatury umieszczonej na pokładzie danych teledetekcyjnych oraz przetworzenie ich przez ośrodki naziemne. Instrumenty zamontowane na satelitach Landsat zrobiły miliony zdjęć. Są one archiwizowane i przechowywane w Stanach Zjednoczonych oraz stacjach odbioru danych na całym świecie. Znalazły one zastosowanie w rolnictwie, kartografii, geologii, leśnictwie, zarządzaniu regionalnym, edukacji i bezpieczeństwie narodowym oraz wielu innych. Nazwa programu "Landsat" została nadana po sukcesie pierwszego satelity tej serii ERTS 1 (ERTS A). Nazwa ta sugeruje, że są to satelity do zbierania informacji o lądach, w przeciwieństwie do seri Seasat, których zadaniem jest pozyskiwanie informacji o morzach i oceanach.
