Labour (economics)

In economics, labour (or labor) is a measure of the work done by human beings. It is conventionally contrasted with such other factors of production as land and capital. There are theories which have created a concept called human capital (referring to the skills that workers possess, not necessarily their actual work), although there are also counter posing macro-economic system theories that think human capital is a contradiction in terms.

Labour economics seeks to understand the functioning of the market and dynamics for labour. Labour markets function through the interaction of workers and employers. Labour economics looks at the suppliers of labour services (workers), the demanders of labour services (employers), and attempts to understand the resulting pattern of wages, employment, and income.

L'économie du travail analyse le fonctionnement du marché du travail défini comme le lieu de rencontre des travailleurs et des employeurs. Dans le cadre d'une économie capitaliste, les « offreurs » de force de travail sont les travailleurs et les demandeurs sont les employeurs. L'économie du travail cherche à analyser la fixation des salaires, le taux d'emploi et le chômage, et permet de déterminer les meilleurs politiques de l'emploi à mettre en place.

Arbeid is in de economische wetenschap één van de productiefactoren. Alle productie is vanaf de vroegste tijden verbonden met menselijke arbeid. Vandaar dat "arbeid" een zogenaamde oorspronkelijke productiefactor wordt genoemd, net zoals "grond", maar in tegenstelling tot "kapitaal", dat een afgeleide productiefactor is. Arbeid omvat zowel lichamelijke als geestelijke menselijke werkzaamheid, gericht op het voortbrengen van goederen en het verwerven van inkomen. Het door arbeid verworven inkomen wordt (arbeids-)loon genoemd.
