La Distinction, a
sociological book by French sociologist
Pierre Bourdieu (1930 - 2002), takes as its basis Bourdieu's
empirical research carried out in 1963 and concluded in 1967/68. The original publication took place in
1979 in France. Richard Nice translated the work into English, and it appeared in the United States in
1984 under the title "Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgement of Taste". In
1998 the International Sociological Association voted it one of the ten most important sociological books of the 20th century.
