One or more defendants are required to respond to the plaintiff's complaint. If the plaintiff is successful, judgment will be given in the plaintiff's favor, and a range of court orders may be issued to enforce a right, award damages, or impose an injunction to prevent an act or compel an act. A declaratory judgment may be issued to prevent future legal disputes.

Un procès est un litige soumis à une juridiction, laquelle peut être par exemple un tribunal ou une cour. À l'issue du procès, une décision est rendue. Il peut s'agir d'un jugement, pour les décisions rendues par les tribunaux, ou d'un arrêt, pour les décisions rendues par les Cours.

La demanda judicial es, en términos generales, toda petición formulada ante un tribunal de justicia y, en sentido estricto, aquel medio a través del cual una persona expone sus pretensiones a un tribunal iniciando así un proceso de carácter civil en sentido amplio (civil, de familia, mercantil, laboral, contencioso-administrativo, etc.), constituyendo el primer acto que inicia la relación procesal.

En stämning utfärdas enligt svensk rätt av allmän domstol efter att stämningsansökan inkommit från käranden i tvistemål eller åklagare i brottmål. Stämning ska delges svaranden, och därmed har rättsprocessen börjat. Stämningen innebär att svaranden/den misstänkte stäms att i svaromål eller huvudförhandling svara på hur han/hon ställer sig till kärandens/åklagarens yrkande (dvs. käromålet eller åtalet). Om så ej sker kan tredskodom utdömas i tvistemål och i enklare brottmål kan utevarohandläggning ske.
