Jorge Chávez International Airport is
Peru's main international and domestic
airport, serving more than 6 million passengers per year. It is located in
Callao, 10 km (6 miles) from Downtown
Lima. Callao is the port city now fully integrated with Lima, the nation's capital. For many years it was the hub for
Aeroperú and
Faucett, one of the oldest airlines in
Latin America. Now it serves as a
hub for many aviation companies.The airport is named after the pioneer Peruvian
aviator Jorge Chávez Dartnell and was inaugurated in
1960 to replace the old Limatambo airport located in
San Isidro which was surrounded by new residential areas. It was
privatized in 2001 and is now managed by Lima Airport Partners (LAP), owned by Fraport AG Frankfurt Airport Services Worldwide.
