LaTeX is a document markup language and document preparation system for the TeX typesetting program. Within the typesetting system, its name is styled as .LaTeX is widely used by mathematicians, scientists, philosophers, engineers, scholars in academia and the commercial world, and other professionals. As a primary or intermediate format (e.g. translating DocBook and other XML-based formats to PDF), LaTeX is used because of the quality of typesetting achievable by TeX. The typesetting system offers programmable desktop publishing features and extensive facilities for automating most aspects of typesetting and desktop publishing, including numbering and cross-referencing, tables and figures, page layout and bibliographies.

Latex refers generically to a stable dispersion (emulsion) of polymer microparticles in an aqueous medium. Latexes may be natural or synthetic. Latex as found in nature is the milky sap of many plants that coagulates on exposure to air. It is a complex emulsion in which proteins, alkaloids, starches, sugars, oils, tannins, resins and gums are found. In most plants, latex is white, but some have yellow, orange, or scarlet latex.

LaTeX [] (oder []) ist ein Softwarepaket, das die Benutzung des Textsatzprogramms TeX mit Hilfe von Makros vereinfacht. LaTeX liegt derzeit in der Version 2e vor.Die Komponente TeX wurde von Donald E. Knuth, Professor an der Stanford-University, entwickelt. Leslie Lamport entwickelte 1984 das System TeX weiter zu LaTeX. Seitdem ist es die bevorzugte Methode, nur noch wenige Anwender verwenden TeX direkt. Der Name bedeutet soviel wie Lamport TeX.

Pierwowzorem był język Scribe.Poprawna wymowa nazwy to latech lub ewentualnie lejtech (IPA: [ˈlɑtɛx], [ˈleɪtɛx]). Zgermanizowana forma "lejtek" jest niepoprawna. Wymowa wynika ze źródłosłowu - ostatnia litera to greckie chi, jako że nazwa TeX wywodzi się z greckiego słowa τεχνη, oznaczającego umiejętność, sztukę, technikę.

Il lattice (detto più correttamente latice o anche latex) è un'emulsione di aspetto lattiginoso e consistenza collosa, generalmente di colore bianco, raramente giallo, arancio o rossastro, che si trova in determinate cellule (i laticiferi) di numerose piante superiori (euforbiacee, papaveracee, moracee, composite (Asteraceae), ecc.) e nei funghi del genere Lactarius da cui prende il nome. La dizione "Schiuma di Lattice" è, invece, utilizzata soprattutto con finalità tecniche e molto utilizzata dagli addetti ai lavori: i materassi, per esempio, si creano con la schiuma di lattice che è il composto primario (miscela di lattice e aria) per cui è possibile procedere alle fasi della vulcanizzazione per raggiungere il prodotto finito, solitamente ma genericamente denominato "materasso in lattice". Le restrittive normative europee in merito fanno, effettivamente, riferimento alla sola "schiuma di lattice" per indicare la totalità dei materassi in lattice e quindi non vi è alcuna differenza tra "lattice" e "schiuma di lattice".
