For the village in Switzerland, see Lenzerheide.A lai was a song form composed in northern Europe, mainly France and Germany, from the 13th to the late 14th century.The poetic form of the lai usually has several stanzas, none of which have the same form. As a result, the accompanying music consists of sections which do not repeat. This distinguishes the lai from other common types of musically important verse of the period (for example, the rondeau and the ballade). Towards the end of its development in the 14th century, some lais repeat stanzas, but usually only in the longer examples. There is one very late example of a lai, written to mourn the defeat of the French at the Battle of Agincourt (1415), (Lay de la guerre, by Pierre de Nesson) but no music for it survives.

Der Leich (Plural Leichs, historisch auch: Leiche; vom germanischen *laikaz, Spiel, Tanz, Bewegung) gehört neben dem Minnesang und der Sangspruchdichtung zu den drei Haupttypen der Lieddichtung des Mittelalters und stellt die Groß- und Prunkgattung der mittelhochdeutschen Lyrik dar. Verwendet wurde er vom Ende des 12. Jahrhundert bis ins 14. Jahrhundert. Am häufigsten ist er aus der frühen höfischen Literatur zwischen 1150 bis um 1190 überliefert. Der deutsche Leich ist sowohl in der Sache als auch in der Benennung vom altfranzösischen Lai beeinflusst.

Lai – starofrancuska forma pieśni lirycznej, najczęściej o tematyce miłosnej, wywodząca się z pieśni celtyckich. Uprawiano ją z zamiłowaniem w Bretanii, z typowym dla truwerów wykonywaniem z towarzystwem instrumentu. Lai miała najczęściej formę poematu (60, 100 lub więcej 4-8-sylabowych wersów) złożonego ze strof o różnej budowie wersyfikacyjnej, z wyjątkiem pierwszej i ostatniej - o identycznym typie wiersza. Z czasem lai przekształciła się w formę narracyjną, gdzie tematyka często obejmowała epizody z opowieści o królu Arturze oraz rycerzach Okrągłego Stołu.
