LÁADAN

Láadan is a constructed language created by Suzette Haden Elgin in 1982 to test the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis for women, specifically to determine if Western natural languages were better suited for expressing the views of men than women. The language was included in her science fiction Native Tongue series. Láadan contains a number of words that are used to make unambiguous statements that include how one feels about what one is saying. According to Elgin, this is designed to counter male-centred language's limitations on women, who are forced to respond "I know I said that, but I meant this".

Il láadan (letteralmente "la lingua della conoscenza percettiva") è una lingua artificiale creata nel 1982 da Suzette Haden Elgin, professore emerito di linguistica presso l’Università di San Diego (USA), per testare le Ipotesi di Sapir-Whorf nei confronti del genere femminile, specificamente per determinare se le lingue naturali occidentali sono state adattate meglio per esprimere i punti di vista maschili rispetto a quelli femminili. La lingua è stata inclusa nella sua trilogia fantascientifica composta da Native Tongue (1984), The Judas Rose (1987) e Earthsong (1994).

Láadan is een kunsttaal, die in 1982 werd gebouwd door de Amerikaanse SF-schrijfster Suzette Haden Elgin. Doel van de taal was aanvankelijk de Sapir-Whorf-hypothese te testen, in het bijzonder om vast te stellen in hoeverre westerse natuurlijke talen geschikter zijn voor het uitdrukken van specifiek mannelijke gezichtspunten dan voor het uitdrukken van vrouwelijke. De taal speelt tevens een rol in Elgin's serie Native Tongue, waarin zij een toekomstige Amerikaanse samenleving beschrijft.
