Guardian Dogs Overview
Kuvaszok (plural) are aggressive and independent. They have an extremely strong instinct to protect the children in their families and are wary of strangers. Likewise, they are good with other animals in their households, but not necessarily friendly with outsiders. Early and ongoing socialization and obedience classes and a firm, consistent owner are mandatory.
Appearance
The double coat can range from quite wavy to straight. The outercoat is medium coarse; the undercoat is fine. The color is white and the skin is heavily pigmented, often slate gray or black.
Grooming & Exercise Needs
Kuvaszok should be brushed twice a week to prevent tangling and matting. Bathing will decrease the odor of the highly absorbent coat. This aggressive breed needs a lot of exercise, including vigorous leashed walks as well as opportunities to run.
Origins
The Kuvasz's ancestors originated in Tibet in the 13th century. The breed was further developed by the Hungarian aristocracy from the 15th through 19th centuries for guarding, hunting, and herding.
The name comes from the Turkish kawasz, which means "armed guard."
Special Alerts
The Kuvasz is not suitable for inexperienced dog owners, or for city or apartment life. Breed-related health concerns: hip dysplasia, deafness, bloat.
