Kulturkreis

The Kulturkreis (roughly, "culture circle" or "cultural field") school was a central concept of the early 20th-century Austrian school of anthropology that sought to redirect the discipline away from the quest for an underlying, universal human nature toward a concern with the particular histories of individual societies. It was the notion of a culture complex as an entity that develops from a centre of origin and becomes diffused over large areas of the world.

Als Kulturkreis bezeichnet(e) man in der Geisteswissenschaft die Typisierung von Gesellschaften als eine Ansammlung von Völkern oder Nationen, denen die gleiche oder zumindest eine ähnliche Kultur zugeschrieben wird. So sprach man beispielsweise von einem lateinamerikanischen Kulturkreis. Der Begriff wird allerdings aus verschiedenen Gründen in der deutschsprachigen Ethnologie mittlerweile recht einhellig abgelehnt. Die Ablehnung des Begriffes Kulturkreis rührt von der Kulturkreislehre her, die in der Ethnologie als überholt gilt.
