The wider municipality comprises the city of Kortrijk proper and the towns of Aalbeke, Bellegem, Bissegem, Heule, Kooigem, Marke, and Rollegem.The city is situated on the River Lys, 42 km (26 miles) southwest of Ghent.

Courtrai (anticamente Courtray, olandese Kortrijk) è un comune del Belgio fiammingo, nella provincia delle Fiandre Occidentali. Si trova a nord-est della città francese di Lille e a sud-est di Gand. Al 1 gennaio 2005, contava 73.625 abitanti. Ha una superficie comunale di 80,03 km².
