Guardian Dogs Overview
Early socialization and obedience classes are mandatory for these independent, stubborn, and powerful dogs. Although Komondorok are playful and completely devoted to their families, people with young children or small animals should be wary.
Owners must be firm and assert dominance early (under the guidance of a dog trainer) or these dogs will become disobedient and possibly aggressive.
Appearance
The undercoat is dense, soft, and woolly. The coarser hairs of the outercoat intertwine with the softer undercoat, forming the breed's distinctive tassel-like cords; this occurs at one to two years of age. The coat is white; the skin is usually gray.
Grooming & Exercise Needs
The komondor needs to be shampooed and thoroughly rinsed monthly because the cords absorb moisture and the dog can become quite smelly. Drying takes several days. Brushing and combing are not necessary, but the cords need to be separated weekly, a task that takes one to two hours. Trimming the cords one to two times a year is also helpful. Komondorok need space and several long, brisk daily walks.
Origins
The komondor has protected livestock since the 16th century in Hungary. It probably arrived there with the Magyars over a thousand years ago.
Special Alerts
Komondorok are not suitable for inexperienced dog owners or for city living, nor do they do well with children.
