Kitgum District

Kitgum is a district in northern Uganda with an area of 9,773.63 square kilometres. The capital, Kitgum Town, is 452 km from the Ugandan capital Kampala. The population of the district is 283,546, according to the 2002 census, and most economic activity is subsistence agriculture. Along with Gulu District and Pader District, Kitgum composes Acholiland, which is considered to be the heartland of the Acholi ethnic group. The district is composed of two counties: Lamwo County and Chua County. On 4 December 2001, the former Kitgum was divided in two, creating the current Kitgum and Pader districts. The district is bordered by Gulu, Pader, and Kotido districts and, to the north, Sudan.

Hauptort des Distrikts ist der gleichnamige Ort Kitgum, 452 km von der Hauptstadt Ugandas Kampala entfernt. Der Distrikt hat laut dem Zensus von 2002 eine Einwohnerzahl von 283.546, wobei durch die Flüchtlingsbewegungen und die große Zahl an Flüchtlingscamps infolge des Rebellenkampfes der Lord's Resistance Army die tatsächliche Bevölkerungszahl variieren kann. Die Einwohner leben großenteils von Subsistenzwirtschaft.

Kitgum is een district in het noorden van Oeganda. Het district heeft een oppervlakte van 9.773.630 vierkante kilometer. De hoofdstad van Kitgum, is de stad Kitgum. De stad ligt op 452 km van de hoofdstad Kampala. Volgens de volkstelling van 2002 woonden er 283.546 mensen in het district. De belangrijkste economische activiteit is landbouw voor eigen gebruik. Samen met Gulu en Pader vormt Kitgum het Acholiland. Het Acholiland is het gebied van de de etnische groep de Acholi.
