Kisumu is a port city in western Kenya at , with a population of 355,024 (1999 census). It is the third largest city in Kenya, the principal city of western Kenya, the immediate former capital of Nyanza Province and the headquarters of Kisumu County. It has a municipal charter but no city charter. It is the largest city in Nyanza region and second most important city after Kampala in the greater Lake Victoria basin.

Kisumu est la troisième plus grande ville du Kenya après Nairobi et Mombasa. Son nom en langue luo (do Luo ou Dholuo) signifie « lieu d'échange, de troc » car c'était le lieu ou les habitants des environs venaient échanger leurs marchandises. C'est un port lacustre situé dans la partie occidentale du Lac Victoria, au fond du golfe de Winam (autrefois appelé golfe du Kavirondo). C'est aussi la capitale de la Province de Nyanza et du district de Kisumu.
