Early Modern France. The Ancien Régime, a
French term rendered in
English as "Old Rule," "Old Kingdom," or simply "Old Regime", refers primarily to the
aristocratic,
social and
political system established in
France from (roughly) the 15th century to the 18th century under the
late Valois and
Bourbon dynasties. The administrative and social structures of the Ancien Régime were the result of centuries of nation-building, legislative acts (like the
Ordinance of Villers-Cotterêts), internal conflicts and civil wars, but they remained a confusing patchwork of local
privilege and historic differences until the
French Revolution brought about a radical suppression of administrative incoherence.

Spanien,
Andorra, an den
Atlantik mit dem
Ärmelkanal und an das
Mittelmeer. Neben dem Territorium in Europa gehören zu Frankreich
Überseegebiete in der
Karibik (u. a.
Saint-Martin, das eine Landgrenze mit dem niederländischen
Sint Maarten aufweist),
Südamerika (
Französisch-Guayana, das Landgrenzen zu
Brasilien und
Surinam hat), vor der Küste
Nordamerikas, im
Indischen Ozean und in
Ozeanien. Ferner beansprucht Frankreich einen Teil der Antarktis. Frankreich ist ein Mitglied der
EU.

I Franchi furono una delle numerose tribù germaniche occidentali che entrarono nel tardo
Impero Romano come
foederati e stabilirono un
reame duraturo, in un'area che copre parte dell'odierna
Francia e della
Germania, formando il nucleo storico di queste due nazioni moderne.Il regno dei Franchi fu sottoposto a varie partizioni e ripartizioni, in quanto essi dividevano le loro proprietà tra i propri figli e, senza un ampio concetto di
res publica, concepivano il regno come una forma estesa della proprietà privata. Questa pratica spiega, in parte, le difficoltà nel descrivere con precisione le date, i confini fisici dei diversi regni franchi e chi ne governava le varie parti. La contrazione nell'alfabetizzazione durante il dominio dei Franchi pone inoltre un altro problema: essi produssero pochi documenti scritti.
