King of Arms

King of Arms is the senior rank of an officer of arms. In many heraldic traditions, only a king of arms has the authority to grant armorial bearings. In other traditions, the power has been delegated to other officers of similar rank.

The herald generally considered to be in charge of ceremony in both court and in war. Heralds first arose as followers of the tournament , so it was a natural development that they grow into the role of ‘stage manager’ for the elaborate festivals and pas d’armes that grew during the 15th and 16th centuries.
