Kilroy was here

Kilroy was here is an American popular culture expression, often seen in graffiti. Its origins are open to speculation, but recognition of it and the distinctive doodle of "Kilroy" peeking over a wall is almost ubiquitous among U.S. residents who lived during World War II through the Korean War.The same doodle also appears in other cultures, but the character peeping over the wall is not named Kilroy but Foo, i.e. Foo was here. In the United Kingdom, such graffiti are known as "chads". In Chile, the graphic is known as a "sapo" [toad]; this may refer to the character's peeping, an activity associated with frogs because of their protruding eyes.

Die Figur Kilroy wurde weltberühmt durch den Satz "Kilroy was here" ("Kilroy war hier"), der im Zweiten Weltkrieg von US-Soldaten an die unmöglichsten und seltsamsten Stellen geschrieben wurde.Der Satz wurde oft von einem Bild begleitet, das ein Gesicht mit einer länglichen Nase und zwei runden Augen zeigte. Dieses Gesicht schaute über eine Mauer und war meist das einzige, aus dem das Bild bestand. Manchmal wurden zusätzlich die Finger gemalt, die sich an der Mauer festhielten.

Kilroy was here – jedna z najbardziej znanych na świecie inskrypcji, wykonywanych w formie graffiti. Po raz pierwszy pojawiła się i zyskała popularność w czasie II wojny światowej.Napisem Kilroy was here oraz towarzyszącym mu schematycznym rysunkiem, przedstawiającym postać wychylającą się zza muru, amerykańscy żołnierze ozdabiali ściany w miejscach obozowania. Rysunek przedstawiający Kilroya wzorowany jest na postaci z komiksu Chad George'a Edwarda Chattertona. Pierwowzorem postaci Kilroya był najprawdopodobniej James J. Kilroy, amerykański inspektor okrętowy, pracujący w czasie wojny w stoczni w Massachusetts, który oznaczał napisem Kilroy was here kontrolowane przez siebie maszyny. Z inskrypcją związanych jest wiele legend – m.in. Hitler miał wierzyć, że Kilroy jest amerykańskim superszpiegiem. Inskrypcję można odnaleźć praktycznie na całym świecie, m.in. na Statui Wolności czy Łuku Triumfalnym. Odpowiednikami Kilroya w innych krajach są m.in. Clem (Kanada), Overby (w latach 60. w Los Angeles), Foo (Wielka Brytania i Australia – zobacz też Foo w informatyce).
