Khazars

The Khazars (Hebrew sing. "Kuzari" כוזרי plur. "Kuzarim" כוזרים;  Turkish sing. "Hazar" plur. Hazarlar; Russian sing. Хазарин plur. Хазары; Tatar sing Xäzär plur. Xäzärlär; ; Greek Χαζάροι/Χάζαροι; Persianخزر khazar; Latin "Gazari" or "Cosri") were a semi-nomadic Turkic people from Central Asia, many of whom converted to Judaism. The name 'Khazar' seems to be tied to a Turkic verb form meaning "wandering" ('gezer' in modern Turkish). In the 7th century CE they founded an independent Khaganate in the Northern Caucasus along the Caspian Sea, where over time Judaism became the state religion. At their height, they and their tributaries controlled much of what is today southern Russia, western Kazakhstan, eastern Ukraine, Azerbaijan, large portions of the Caucasus (including Dagestan, Georgia), and the Crimea.

Les Khazars ( en hébreu, en turc, en russe, en tatar, en tatar de Crimée, en grec, en arabe, en perse, en latin) étaient un peuple semi-nomade turc d’Asie centrale ; leur existence est attestée entre le après J.-C. Le nom Khazar semble dériver d'un mot turc signifiant errant, nomade (gezer en turc moderne). Au les Khazars s'établirent en Ciscaucasie aux abords de la mer Caspienne où ils fondèrent leur Khaganat ; une partie d'entre eux se convertirent alors au judaïsme qui devint religion d'État. À leur apogée, les Khazars, ainsi que leurs vassaux, contrôlaient un vaste territoire qui pourrait correspondre à ce que sont aujourd'hui le sud de la Russie, le Kazakhstan occidental, l'Ukraine orientale, la Crimée, l'est des Carpates, ainsi que plusieurs autres régions de Transcaucasie telles l'Azerbaïdjan et la Géorgie.

Chazarowie, Kozarowie – lud koczowniczy pochodzenia tureckiego, według innych teorii spokrewniony z Bułgarami, Ugrami lub Ujgurami, o którym pierwsze wzmianki pochodzą z VI wieku n.e. Tereny zajmowane przez Chazarów rozciągały się między północnym Kaukazem, Krymem, Morzem Kaspijskim a rzeką Jaik i Samarą. Trudnili się głównie pasterstwem, a bogacili na łupieskich wyprawach.

I Cazari (o anche K(h)azari o più raramente Khazary) (ebraico sing. Kuzar כוזרי plur. Kuzarim כוזרים;  turco sing. Hazar plur. Hazarlar; russo sing. Хазарин plur. Хазары; tataro sing Xäzär plur. Xäzärlär; greco Χαζάροι/Χάζαροι; persiano خزر Khazar; latino Gazari o Cosri) sono una confederazione di popolazioni turche seminomadi originarie delle steppe dell'Asia Centrale in cui confluirono elementi iranici, slavi ed i resti dei Goti Orientali di Crimea. Nel VII secolo fondano il Khanato di Khazaria nelle regioni più sud-orientali dell'Europa, vicino al Mar Caspio ed al Caucaso. Oltre alla regione oggi chiamata Kazakhstan il khanato comprende anche parti dell'Ukraina, l'Azerbaijan, il sud della Russia e la penisola di Crimea. Intorno al periodo di fondazione del khanato i Cazari si convertono all'ebraismo. Il nome 'Cazari' che essi stessi si sono dati proviene da un verbo in lingua turca che significa "vagabondare".
