Khagan ou Grand Khan (turc : kaɣan ; mongol : хаган ; chinois : 可汗 ; pinyin : kèhán) est un titre équivalent à celui d'empereur dans les langues mongole et turque. Le titre est porté par celui qui dirige un khaganat (empire, plus grand qu'un khanat). Khagan peut également être traduit par Khan des Khans, terme signifiant roi des rois.

Khan (Ḫān; auch Chan oder neutürk. Han), abgeleitet aus "Khagan" (Ḫāǧān), ist ein ursprünglich mongolischer Herrschertitel, der vor allem von den altaischen Reiternomaden Zentral- und Mittelasiens verwendet wurde und zahlreiche Bedeutungen besitzt, zu deren Kern Befehlshaber, Anführer, Herr und Herrscher zählen.

Kagan (właściwie: kağan; chan chanów) – tytuł używany przez władców mongolskich, tureckich, chazarskich, awarskich i bułgarskich pretendujących do władania większą grupą plemion. Używali go warescy władcy Rusi Kijowskiej a także przywódcy Awarów. Pierwsze świadectwa dokumentujące używanie terminu kagan pochodzą z  IV w. z Chin i mówią o nomadycznym plemieniu Juan-Juan. Później tytuł używany był przez Mongołów.Wśród chazarskich plemion używano wersji żeńskiej katum ("Chazarski wiatr" Marek Halter)

Khan è un titolo nobiliare di origine asiatica (Mongolia e Turchia). Si trova anche scritto come Xan, Han, Ke Han (da notare che in mongolo il titolo segue il nome, come in "Gengis Khan"). Originariamente voleva significare comandante, leader o capo tribù; attualmente il titolo è riscontrabile in Asia Centro-Meridionale. Se inizialmente era il titolo usato dai capitribù turco-mongoli delle steppe, esso conobbe una incredibile fortuna dopo le conquiste di Gengis Khan e la formazione dell'Impero Mongolo. In realtà, il vero titolo di Gengis era Khagan, ovvero "Khan dei Khan", o Gran Khan, che corrisponde al nostro "imperatore". Questo titolo fu ereditato poi dai suoi successori fino a Kublai Khan. I sovrani dei regni in cui fu diviso l'Impero avevano invece il titolo di Khan. In Italia, sembra che il grande signore e condottiero Cangrande della Scala amasse far derivare la sua famiglia e il nome da un khan avaro giunto nella penisola insieme ai longobardi.
