Keiko Abe

is a Japanese composer and virtuoso marimba player. She has been a primary figure in the development of the marimba, in terms of expanding both technique and repertoire, and through her collaboration with the Yamaha musical instrument company, developed the modern five-octave concert marimba.

Keiko Abe (安部圭子, Abe Keiko) (Tokio, 18 april 1937) is een Japanse componiste en marimbabespeelster. Zij behoort tot de belangrijkste hedendaagse Japanse musici.Zij is afkomstig uit een familie van artsen en kooplui. Als kind kreeg zij pianoles en vanaf haar 12e levensjaar les voor marimba en compositie. In het Xebec Trio speelde zij commerciële lichtklassieke muziek, maar die verwisselde zij in 1962 voor eigentijdse klassieke muziek. Haar studie voor marimba voltooide zij aan de Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokio.
