Kassos

Kasos (also Kassos; Greek: Κάσος; Italian: Caso) is a Greek island municipality in the Dodecanese. It is the southernmost island in the Aegean Sea. As of 2001, its population was 990. In ancient times, the island a safe harbor for the Philistines, and to this day is still regarded as an island where ship owners could locate a sea savvy crew. It has a very rich and proud history of seamanship and its naval skills were feared by surrounding countries as they waged war on their neighbors and the Kassiots intervened. At one point in 1825, the Pasha of Turkey was so furious of the Kassiots that he dispatched his naval fleet to this tiny island and killed the population.[1] Kasos was not part of Greece until 1948 when it was officially annexed. The Municipality of Kasos includes several uninhabited offshore islands, the largest of which are Armathia and Makronisi. Its total land area is 69.464 km².

Kasos ( ) ist eine griechische Insel, die zur Inselgruppe und Präfektur der Dodekanes gehört. Zusammen mit den unbewohnten Inseln Armathia und Makronisi bildet sie eine gleichnamige Gemeinde (dímos/δήμος). Die 66 km² große und bis zu 583 m hohe Insel liegt etwa 7 km südwestlich von Karpathos und rund 70 km nordöstlich von Kreta und ist damit die südlichste Insel der Südlichen Sporaden. Ihre Küstenlänge beträgt 50 km.

Kassos (gr.Κάσος) jest Grecką wyspą na Morzu Egejskim, należy do archipelagu Dodekanez. Ppulacja wyspy wynosi 990 mieszkańców (2001). W czasach antycznych wyspa stanowiła bezpieczny port dla Filistynów, i do dnia dzisiejszego załogi statków mogą znaleźć bezpieczne schronienie w trakcie sztormu. Oprócz tego wyspa słyneła w starożytności oraz za czasów Otomanów ze swoich marynarzy oraz ludzi swiązanych z morzem. Kassos nie należała do Grecji aż do roku 1948 kiedy wtedy wyspa została oficjalnie zaanektowana. W swojej historii wyspa nalężała m.in. do Turcji oraz Włoch. Gmina Kassos obejmuje również okoliczne wyspy z czego największe są Armathia oraz Makronisi. Lączna powierzchnia wyspy wynosi 69,5 km²

Kassos (Kasos) is een eiland welke behoort tot Griekenland en is het meest zuidelijke eiland van de eilandengroep Dodekanesos, gelegen 7 km ten zuidwesten van het eiland Karpathos. Fri is de hoofdstad van het eiland en ligt aan de Bouka baai. Aan de oostkust ligt de plaats Borios.De Feniciërs zouden de eerste inwoners zijn geweest van dit eiland. Dit staat in de 'Catalogus van de Griekse steden' van Homerus, die aan de Trojaanse oorlog deelnamen.Kassos is een bergachtig eiland en heeft een rotsachtige kustlijn met enkele stranden. De drie voornamelijke stranden van het eiland zijn bij Ammouda, Emborios en Fri.
