Karystos

Karystos is a small coastal town on the Greek island of Euboea. It has about 7,000 inhabitants. It lies 129 km south of Chalkis. From Athens it is accessible by ferry via the Rafina port. Its urban plan was laid out by the renown Bavarian civil engineer Bierbach, in the middle of the 19th century, near the site of the ancient city of Karystos.

Karystos (gr. Κάρυστος) ist ein Ort an der Südküste der griechischen Insel Evia (Euböa). Er hat heute ca. 5.000 Einwohner.Die Stadt wurde 475 v. Chr. gewaltsam vom Attischen Seebund unterworfen. Im Mittelalter gehörte der Ort zu Venedig, woran bis heute die im 13. Jh. erbaute Festung Castel Rosso erinnert.Am 29. August 1348 besiegten die Venezianer in der Seeschlacht von Karystos die Genuesen.
