Canaan (IPA pronunciation: , Hebrew: , Greek: whence Latin ; and from Hebrew, Aramaic , whence Arabic ). Etymology from "low" applied to the coast as the "lowlands" and by extension to the neighboring region. It is an ancient term for a region approximating to present-day Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip, plus adjoining coastal lands and parts of Lebanon and Syria. The Hebrew Bible identifies Canaan with Lebanon — foremost with the coastal city of Sidon — but extends the "Land of Canaan" southward across Gaza to the "Brook of Egypt" and eastward to the Jordan Valley, thus including modern Israel with the Palestinian Territories. This southern area included various ethnic groups. The Amarna Letters found in Ancient Egypt mention Canaan (Akkadian: ) in connection with Gaza and other cities along the Phoenician coast and into Upper Galilee. Many earlier Egyptian sources also make mention of numerous campaigns conducted in Ka-na-na, just inside Asia.

Le Pays de Canaan (en hébreu : כנען Kəná‘an, Kənā‘an - Kená'an, Kná'an; en arabe : kanaʿān, ) est un terme utilisé dans le récit biblique pour décrire la partie du Proche-Orient située entre la Méditerranée et le Jourdain (cette région correspond plus ou moins aujourd'hui aux territoires de la Palestine historique, de l'ouest de la Jordanie, du sud de la Syrie et du Liban), avant sa conquête par Josué et les Tribus d'Israël sorties d'Égypte.

Kanaan (ägyptisch k3nˁnˁ, assyrisch kinaḫi, babylonisch kananu, arabisch کنعان, hebräisch כְּנַעַן, griechisch Χανααν) ist ein antiker Name für das Gebiet im vorderen Orient, das allgemeiner mit West-Palästina (Heiliges Land, Eretz Israel = Land des Israelischen Volkes) bezeichnet wird. Nach dem Bericht der Genesis (Kapitel 12ff) in der Tora, bezeichnet es das Abraham und seinen Nachkommen versprochene Land (Gelobtes Land). Die nichtisraelitischen Einwohner der kanaanäischen Stadtstaaten bezeichnet man als Kanaaniter.

Kanaan, Chanaan (hebr. כְּנַעַן Kənáʻan lub כְּנָעַן Kənāʻan, Chanaan, ar. کنعان Kanʻān) – starożytna kraina na wschodnim wybrzeżu  Morza Śródziemnego (teren późniejszej Palestyny, Syrii i Fenicji). Południowa część tych obszarów (Palestyna) wymieniana jest w Biblii jako ziemia obiecana Izraelitom przez Boga.
