Kalmyk redirects here; for the breed of cattle, see Kalmyk (cattle). Kalmyk (alternatively "Kalmuck," "Kalmuk," or "Kalmyki") is the name given to and later adopted by those Oirats who migrated en masse from Central Asia in the seventeenth century to settle in European Russia [1]. Alone among the peoples of Europe, the Kalmyks' national religion is Vajrayana Buddhism. Today they form a majority in the autonomous Republic of Kalmykia on the western shore of the Caspian Sea. Through emigration, Kalmyk communities have been established in the United StatesFranceGermany and the Czech Republic.
